When will fusion make electricity I can consume?

ITER will make a small amount of electricity (~ 1 MW) which could be delivered to the consumer as a proof of principle. However, serious power generation from fusion will not occur until the subsequent machine, which must after a test phase be a demonstration of reliable electrical power production. Such a machine should begin operation in ~ 2035 if all goes well with ITER and the parallel materials development programme, so the first reliable electrical power generated from fusion for the consumer would then be around 2040.
