The ITER Organization

ITER will be built by the ITER Organization (click here for an organigram), or, in full, the ITER International Fusion Energy Organization (IIFEO). Currently, the seven ITER Parties are in the process of establishing this organization through a Joint Implementation Agreement between the Participants in Negotiations. The agreement was signed on 21 November 2006, and ratification of this agreement will in all likelihood be concluded by late spring 2007. The IIFEO is the organization which holds the license for ITER construction and which is responsible for the construction and safe operation of ITER. In older texts, the ITER Organization is sometimes referred to as the ITER Legal Entity (ILE).

The ITER Organization will have an ITER Project Team composed of a Central Team (at the construction site) and Field Teams (essentially branch offices) located somewhere on each of the territories of the non-hosting Parties. The ITER Project Team will have its own budget for about 10% of the hardware procurements and for procurement of services at all these locations.

The organization is currently foreseen to have the broad arrangement illustrated below.
