The work of many

Hundreds of people contributed to the different aspects of B2 slab realization, including design, procurement, scheduling, quality, finance and construction. Not everyone could be present today, but all were recognized by the ITER Director-General in his congratulatory speech.

Standing on the slab

Works were carried out by the F4E construction consortium led by GTM Sud from France. GTM was also in charge of the excavation of the Tokamak Complex Seismic Pit (August 2010-April 2011) and the construction of the lower level basemat and retaining walls (April 2011-April 2012).

A landmark day for ITER

The completion of the 9,300 m² B2 slab on 27 August concludes four years of work (2010-2014) to create a ground support structure for the Tokamak Complex.

The floor is finished

493 anti-seismic columns and pads are sandwiched between the B2 slab, completed today, and the lower basemat installed on the floor of the Tokamak Pit. The B2 slab will be the first basement level of the Diagnostic, Tokamak and Tritium buildings.

A lot of material

Today's pour required 865 m³ of concrete. In total, the 1.5-metre-thick B2 slab contains 3,600 tons of rebar and 14,000 m³ of concrete.

An ambirious work schedule

Work on the nine segments in the centre of the B2 slab began on 10 July. With double shifts, Saturday shifts, and night shifts the team was able to realize nine segments in seven weeks.

The very centre

The perfectly circular, final segment of the B2 slab will directly support the ITER Tokamak. But before that, in its very centre, an 80-metre crane will be installed for the next stage of works: Tokamak Complex wall construction.
