India has expressed its interest formally to participate in ITER in a letter from Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, to Director-General Dr. Achilleas Mitsos of the European Commission DG Research.

Dr. Kakodkar states "We are seriously considering the possibility of joining ITER project as a full partner, including providing a substantial contribution in kind to the project comparable to what is envisaged by some of the participants in the present negotiations." He went on to propose a meeting with the ITER partners as soon as possible.
