ITER has always been designed so that it could be built on the territory of any of the Parties, and so that experiments can be conducted from remote centres throughout the participating countries. After much discussion between the ITER Participants, the original four site choices in Canada, France, Japan and Spain, were narrowed down in 2003 to two sites, and finally in June 2005 to Cadarache, near Aix-en-Provence, France. The construction site covers a total available surface area of about 40 hectares with another 30 hectares available temporarily nearby for use during the construction period. Other key site requirements for ITER include thermal cooling capacity on average of 450 MW and electrical power supply of up to 120 MW steady-state.
Further information on the Cadarache site can be found (for the moment) on their own web site (promotional video).
