Last Thursday 24 September, during the most recent IO-DA coordination meeting at Chengdu, China, the Procurement Arrangement for the In-Wall Shielding (IWS) - Number 26 for those who are counting - was signed by the ITER Organization and the Indian Domestic Agency.

In-wall shielding consists of about 9000 blocks made out of borated steel and ferromagnetic steel. The blocks will fill the space between the double walls of the ITER vacuum vessel and will perform the dual role of absorbing the neutrons generated by the fusion reaction within the plasma and reducing the toroidal field ripple, a periodic variation of the toroidal field from its nominal value.
