ITER Open Doors Day

Approximately 700 members of the public attend the ITER Open Doors Day organized on Saturday 17 May. With 75 volunteers on hand to present the project and answer questions, every visitor left with a better understanding of the scale and scope of the project and the advantages of fusion energy.

ITER Open Doors Days offer a unique opportunity for the public to discover one of the most ambitious energy projects in the world. During your time with us, you will be invited to explore the ITER site, learn about the science and technology behind fusion energy, and meet the people who are working to make it a reality.

The purpose of an Open Doors Day is to share knowledge, foster dialogue, and strengthen the connection between the project and the community. By welcoming schools, families, students, professionals, and the general public, ITER aims to inspire curiosity, encourage interest in science and engineering, and highlight the global collaboration that drives this groundbreaking experiment.

Through guided tours, exhibitions, demonstrations, and interactive activities, participants gain an insider’s view of how fusion energy could become a safe, sustainable, and large-scale source of energy for the future.

Open Doors Days at ITER are more than just a visit—they are a bridge between science and society, opening the path to greater understanding of how international cooperation can address the energy challenges of tomorrow.

Why It Matters

Open Doors Days play several vital roles:

  • Public understanding: ITER is technically complex. Open Doors Days help demystify fusion, enabling people to see the scale, the challenges, and the potential.
  • Inspiration: For students, especially, seeing a giant tokamak under construction can spark curiosity and perhaps a vocation for a career in one of the STEM fields.
  • Transparency: Large science projects often face scrutiny regarding cost, environmental impact, safety, etc. Allowing the public to visit helps with accountability and trust.
  • Engaging a wide audience: From locals to international visitors, the event draws people from many backgrounds; it’s a way to build broad support for fusion energy.

What to Expect on Open Doors Days

ITER Open Doors Days are held twice a year (in spring and autumn). Here’s what visitors can expect:

  • Guided Tours: Visitors are escorted through key assembly areas like the tokamak assembly pit, the Assembly Hall, and other infrastructure areas, depending on site access.
  • Exhibitions and Demonstrations: Interactive displays, component mockups, virtual-reality or 3D virtual tours, video presentations, science shows for young people (e.g., the “Plasamagician”) and demonstrations make complex physics accessible.
  • Meet the Experts: Engineers, scientists, safety specialists, and support staff are on hand to answer any question.
  • Family-Friendly Activities: Special programs for children are always part of the Open Doors Days. Simple science experiments and demonstrations are offered to make science fun and engaging for our younger visitors.
