In July, 2008, Luigi Serio was awarded the "100 years of Liquid Helium Special Award" for the best paper concerning a major 21st century cryogenic project at the International Cryogenic Engineering Conference in Seoul, Korea. The paper was entitled "Conceptual design of the cryogenic system for ITER" (Authors: L. Serio, D. Henry, V. Kalinin, M. Sanmarti, B.Sarkar).
