Tokamak Operation
Scope
The Tok Ops topical group supports the preparation for ITER operation as a volunteer expert group, providing advisory input and sharing operational experience.
Its broader mission is to provide a platform for the ITER Members to discuss technical aspects on tokamak operation that are relevant to future and next-generation fusion devices.
Through technical discussion, data consolidation, and experience sharing, Tok Ops strengthens both ITER readiness and the long-term operational capability of the international fusion community.
Tasks
Through the collection of operational experience of existing tokamaks the following tasks aim at knowledge sharing, advice and support to the ITER Organization on the technical aspects of fusion devices systems/components and plant systems including commissioning, operation, maintenance requirements and risk mitigation measures (fault, fault prevention, fault recovery). These tasks focus on:
Integrated Commissioning and beyond – evaluation of expected versus actual systems performance and impact on the development of the scientific research plan
Tokamak Operations – running and maintaining a tokamak and associated systems
Necessary Tools, Simulators, and AI-Conceptual Level necessary for the preparation and execution of tokamak operation. Testing in different machines
Compilation and analysis of engineering databases related to operation, commissioning and maintenance from all machines (failures, fault prevention, scarce resources, monitoring of fatigue, etc.)
Engineering readiness indicators and Radiation-Driven Operation – advisory input on neutron fluence management, evolution of activation and dose rates, end‑of‑campaign dose peaks, and recovery strategies after unplanned shutdowns, etc.
