16th ITER International School announced in India: "Tokamaks as Fusion Reactors"

Two ITER International Schools in one year? That translates to double the opportunity for young fusion scientists and engineers to gain skills that are relevant to the ITER project's success.

In the cylindrical tokamak pit, the ITER reactor is taking shape (May 2026).

For the first time in the 20-year history of the ITER International School, two schools will take place in one year. Following the 15th ITER International School, organized this month in China, a second event—the 16th ITER International School (IIS)—will take place from 30 November to 4 December 2026 in Bangalore, India. Organized around the theme "Tokamaks as Fusion Reactors," the 16th ITER International School is jointly hosted by the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar, and the International Center for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bangalore, and will take place at ICTS. 

The ITER International School aims to prepare young scientists and engineers for working in the field of nuclear fusion and in research applications associated with the ITER project. The "school" format reflects the necessity of training future professionals on a wide range of interdisciplinary subjects, equipping them with a broad understanding of the skills required to contribute effectively to ITER’s success.

The scientific program is being coordinated by Drs. Indranil Bandyopadhyay and Mahendrajit Singh from IPR, head of the ITER Science Division Dr. Alberto Loarte, and Prof. Sadruddin Benkadda (Aix-Marseille University). As the first experimental fusion reactor, ITER will pave the way for the first commercial tokamak reactors with net production of electricity. To reach this goal several scientific and technological challenges need to be addressed and resolved, for which ITER is a crucial first step. The school will cover a broad range of topics related to tokamak fusion reactors’ physics and technologies, such as plasma confinement, heat and particle exhaust, integrated control and operation, plasma-materials interaction, superconducting magnets technology, neutron shielding and tritium breeding.

20 years of ITER International Schools

The first ITER School was organized in Aix-en-Provence, France, in July 2007 on the topic of turbulent transport in fusion plasmas. Fourteen successive schools have followed on a variety of subjects: magnetic confinement (Fukuoka, Japan, 2008); plasma-surface interactions (Aix-en-Provence, 2009); magneto-hydro-dynamics and plasma control (Austin, Texas, USA, 2010); energetic particles (Aix-en-Provence, 2011); radio-frequency heating (Ahmedabad, India, 2012); high-performance computing in fusion science (Aix-en-Provence, 2014); transport and pedestal physics in tokamaks (Hefei, China, 2016); physics of disruptions and control (Aix-en-Provence, 2017); the physics and technology of power flux handling (Daejeon, Korea, 2019); ITER plasma scenarios and control (San Diego, USA, 2022), the impact and consequences of energetic particles on fusion plasmas (Aix-en-Provence, 2023), magnetic fusion diagnostics and data science (Nagoya, Japan, 2024), integrated modelling of magnetic fusion plasmas (Aix-en-Provence, France, 2025), and physics and engineering of heating and current drive systems for magnetic fusion plasmas (Chengdu, China, July 2026).
